How to Choose a Belly Dance Balancing Sword

July 11, 2010

A balancing sword can be a dynamic addition to your belly dance repertoire – it’s a great way to get audience attention on your entrance, even if you don’t use it for your complete performance.

A good belly dance sword is expensive, so it’s very crucial to find the right one to begin with. Unless you have some experience using sword and know how to try it out before purchasing, never buy a sword that isn’t specially designed for bellydance.

The reason is the balance point. A sword that’s been designed for belly dancewill have its balance point towards the center of the sword, so the hilt and the point hang fairly uniformly on both sides of your head. That leaves as much clear space as possible under the sword for arm movements, without the risk of knocking the sword off your head!

Swords designed as collectibles or for sword fighting regularly have a balance point up near the hilt (handle). That means the handle will sit too close to your head, while the blade will hang a great distance out to one side – if it’s's a particularly curved blade like a scimitar, the sharpened point can hang down past your shoulder, and will constantly get in the way of your arm on that side. So be sure the sword you’re about to buy is a ” bellydance sword ” or a “balancing sword ” before handing over your cash.

If your sword arrives with a sharpened blade, please dull it before dancing with it. Even a blunt sword can be deadly – let’s not even think about dropping asharpened one! Some ornamental swords have never been sharpened – they have a thicker rounded edge instead, which is safer. However if you’re going to be dancing close to your audience, bear in mind that these swords don’t look at all threatening, which dremoves the “thrill factor ” of your performance.

If you’re buying a sword that hasn’t got its own case or scabbard, make sure to buy or make one to keep your sword in the very best condition. A good sword will serve you well for a long while – and if you need to upgrade, a well-cared-for blade will bring an excellent resale price from some other up and coming bellydancer!
