Getting Rid of the Pain: 3 Simple Steps for Ear Ache Treatment

April 4, 2010

Desperate for earache pain relief? It is only when you understand what causes your earache could you finally find the right treatment for it.

Often, earaches are accompanied by a bout of sore throat.  However, it’s also possible for you to get earaches even if you do not have a sore throat.  It is advisable for you to consult with an eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist when you experience these symptoms.  The ear is quite delicate — you don’t want to fiddle with it, only to end up hurting yourself even worse.

Now, for run-of-the-mill aches, there are things you can do to for earache treatment.

1. Warm Compress.
You’ve probably heard this before: putting a heating pad or a warm cloth under your ear while you lie on that side can relieve the pain.

Another advice is to use warm mineral oil.  You have to, however, be careful with how hot you heat the oil so that you do not burn or scald your eardrums.  A good rule of thumb is to use oil that is warm to touch rather than scalding hot. Put a couple of drops of mineral oil onto your aching ear.  The pain will stop almost immediately.

2. Germicidal Treatment with Hydrogen Peroxide
The common use for hydrogen peroxide for aural health is for wax buildup control, but it could also be used for earache relief.  It’s simple to do.

- Use a baby bulb syringe to put between 5 to 10 drops in your aching ear.
- Lie on your side for 10 minutes to make sure the peroxide pools in the affected ear.
- Wait 10 minutes and then tilt the affected ear over the sink, to drain the peroxide.
- You can then flush out your aching ear with water in a gentle manner.

Aside from its soothing benefits, hydrogen peroxide is considered to be a potent germicide as well.  If an infection is what caused your earache, then this hydrogen peroxide treatment could save you from further ear trouble.  This practice has been used by a doctor who has advocated natural therapies over chemical treatments.  Whatever the cause of your earache is, a hydrogen peroxide treatment would help ease your pain by either cleaning out wax build up or by killing bacterial growth.

3. Over-the-Counter Drops.
These drops are safe and inexpensive, and in some cases, they help. It would not hurt to try these medications out.  These ear drops are a lot better than taking antibiotics to relieve you of your ear ache.

These three recommendations are just a few of the earache home remedies you can try for fast relief.  Go out and try them out for yourself!  Your ears will thank you for it!
