Are you sure you want wood floors?
It is amazing how popular wood flooring has become in England over the past decade. This is odd because despite central heating ande improved insulation, English houses can have cold floors in winter – and they are worse in Scotland, where wood floors are just as popular.
But still, a wooden floor can be pretty cold to the feet in winter in a living room. Now a kitchen or dining room is a different story. For one thing you are usually moving around in a kitchen, and for another you are likely to get scraps of food about. Also, people usually come into the house from the garden into the kitchen, so a floor that can be cleaned easily is a good thing.
The fact that walnut wood flooring lasts a very long time – there are wood floors of over 150 years old still in use – is one reason they are popular. Needless to say you want to make sure you get real wood flooring.
The choice really is between oak parquet and walnut floors. Both are good, but oak is lighter in colour which is generally easier to live with. In both cases, these are solid wood floors, made of strips of wood.
People like the idea of fitting and forgetting. Of course, with children there are other benefits in that it is much easier to clean up a mess on a wooden floor than on a carpet. In fact, in a home with a big family, carpets can get messy very quickly.
If you drop something really heavy on to a wooden floor, it will probably bounce back, owing to the springiness in wood, and there is quite likely to be no marks on the wood. What if you do get a dent in the wood? Well, there are various ways of getting dents to come out, as expert furniture repairers know, but the chances are that you can ignore it till the whole floor is in need of renovation, and then get it sanded down. So after all, it seems there are some advantages to wooden floors even in the UK – but you might need to get some nice lined slippers.
